Southern Heart is a cardiology service that helps to identify, prevent and treat heart disease. Our aim is simple – to improve quality of life by managing conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. We put patients first.
How we help
Your GP will refer you to us either to help with reducing your risk of heart disease, or because they think you may have a heart problem that needs to be checked out. We work our way through checking symptoms or problems related to the heart and your arteries. We have a variety of tests to help diagnose the problem and report back to your doctor. That diagnosis then allows us to come up with a plan for you to manage the condition.
Our services
We offer tests to understand what the heart is doing. These include ECGs, echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), monitors to wear at home, and stress testing. We have a consultation service to discuss problems in full and work out potential solutions. And we offer procedures that include cardioversion, inserting stents, pacemakers, and artificial valves.
Heart conditions
There are several types of heart disease and cardiovascular conditions that affect the heart, so it is important to recognise the illness in order to treat it.
Chest pain
Narrowing of the blood vessels to the heart can cause chest pain, as well as jaw pain, back or arm pain, or a choking feeling.
Shortness of breath
Any problem that affects the ability of the heart to pump can cause shortness of breath. Heart failure can also cause swollen ankles or fatigue.
Palpitations
Most of the time, the feeling of an erratic or fast heartbeat won’t cause any problems, but some heart rhythms can be serious.
Referrals
Your specialist GP or primary care provider is the first place to go with any health concern that isn’t an emergency. If specialist cardiovascular care is needed, you can then be referred to us.
